The Year of……..’The Brooch’

The Year of……..’The Brooch’

As well as Chinese New Year of the Snake. I am making 2013 The Year of The Brooch.

In my opinion this piece of jewelry is totally understated, under-sold and considered the poor relation to other pieces of jewelry. Yet, it is the perfect accessory to accentuate any outfit.

When gift shopping for jewelry, we tend to go for the obvious i.e. earrings, necklaces, bracelets/bangles, rings and watches, but not ‘The Brooch’. Why is that? maybe we associate this as minimal accessory piece and not a statement piece, it could be that it has connotations of being old-fashioned.

I do admit that when I think about my memories of my grandma. I immediately think about the way she dressed. Hat, hat pin, silk scarf tucked into the neck of her smart camel coat and a brooch. If the brooch wasn’t attached to her coat then it would be at her throat on an elegant silk blouse.

A little something left to me by my grandma.

But whether your taste is couture, cult, outlandish, contemporary, vintage, antique, designer, or custom-made, don’t dismiss a brooch.

So I got to thinking. I opened my jewelry draw – more cosmetic jewelry than fine jewelry! I found my Pouch of brooches.

Vivienne Westwood – a present from me to me a few years ago!

Most of my brooches are years old, therefore, have a little bit of personal history behind them.

Whether, you shop etsy, or Tiffany. There is a design and price tag style to suit all. Calling all you gentleman out there, if you can wear a tie pin, why not a brooch, after all a tie pin is just a glorified brooch isn’t it? Think of a boot lace tie/ almost a necklace? therefore, one could state that a brooch is not just for the ladies is it?

How do I wear mine? Coat lapels (pretty obvious), dècolletage, shoulder, waist, sleeve, shirt cuff, kilt. Join a couple together, around the neck/hair. So versatile, elegant and stylish.

This maybe the year of the snake but it’s also ‘The Year of The Brooch’. Be inventive, next time you are looking for something different try brooch shopping.

That is my 2013 Jewelry prediction.

A baby born in the Year of the Snake is said to be clever, calculating and planning to achieve goals.

What do you think? How do you wear your Brooch? Is a brooch gender specific?

London Fashion Week SS13. Highlights of Yesterdays Collections

London Fashion Week SS13. Highlights of Yesterdays Collections

It seems that London is literally on fire. This year being the Queen’s jubilee year, then there was Wimbledon, plus the undeniable success of the Olympic games and now London Fashion Week.

London in my mind is the epicentre of the fashion industry. So, many uniquely talented designers who are not afraid to experiment with designs, fabrics, textures, colour and patterns.

These are a couple of the highlights from yesterdays collection. Two amazing women with a totally different styles.

Temperley, LondonAlice Temperley as we all know is a favourite of Kate Duchess of Cambridge.

She stated that her ideal client would be: “A sexy, strong, well-travelled and confident woman. She knows her own identity but yet is comfortable enough to experiment with different styles and shapes.”

Temperley’s mix of delicate prints, sheers, incorporated into both daytime and sophisticated evening wear.

The return of the dirndl skirt!

In Contrast: Vivienne Westwoodknown for her sometimes outrageous punk style. I love this 50′s inspired collection.

The Colour Purple

The colour purple is derived from the mixing of a strong warm and a strong cool colour. Purple is therefore, a combination of both warm and cool properties. The opposite colours of hot red and cool blue infuse together to create this intriguing and vibrant colour. It is also associated with royalty and sprituality.

Think, plum, violet, aubergine (eggplant), amethyst, Lavender.

The hemline length of just above the knee or just below the knee is so flattering, especially if paired with heels.

Prince & Purple Rain

Prince is one of the greatest performing artist who I admire. Apologies, as I couldn’t locate the video I wanted to display. But you get the idea – don’t you?

Are you attracted to the colour purple?

What would be your favourite spring/summer colours?

LFW AW 12: Day 3

Day 3 of London Fashion Week

The day is nowhere near over yet. But to date my favourite collection so far has to be Vivienne Westwood - Red Label.

Punk Rock Glamour Rules OK!

You have to hand it to her Dame Vivienne doesn’t hold back when putting her eclectic & stylish pieces together. Her signature is written all over this Red Label Collection, as you would expect. Plaids, stripes, mix and match prints, spat styled boots, hand painted tattoos, shall I go on….lets just show some of her unique designs.

Opening with what could have been a sketch from any comedy show! So quirky. The model looks positively bemused!

Is there a hint of elegance meets Johnny Rotten with a little Parisian influence thrown in for good measure? I love this look from the coat, trousers, handbag to the neckerchief.

Pinocchio/Woodcutter hat, pin-striped shirt and signature checked trousers. The most stylist female gangster that auditioned on the catwalk.

This leather vest has to be the one ’must have’ piece for the fall.

Duran Duran ruffles, combined with velvet and denim, simply stunning. So chic. This hipster pantsuit oozes style and sophistication, so versatile, wear to the office or a special evening out.

Marios Schwab

Sexy Hollywood, with a subtle ‘peek-a-boo’ underslip just visible in vivid green.

I adore this trouser suit combo, it could have been influenced by vintage hollywood movies. This is one gown for the Oscars don’t you think?

A little disappointed with Margaret Howell, J W Anderson, Mulberry and Nicole Farhi. If I dare say that about these iconic designers. I guess it is a matter of personal taste.

There is yet so much more to come from today’s schedule. Topshop Unique,, Jonathan Saunders, Louise Gray, Matthew Williamson and ACNE.
