Michelle Obama Wears Thom Browne at Inauguration

Michelle sporting her new look hairstyle, looked every inch the First Lady at today’s inauguration.

It all began at the weekend.

On saturday evening the Obama ladies stepped out in style for the Kids’ Inaugural Concert with featured performances by Katy Perry, Usher, Mindless Behavior and Fun. The star-studded party, thrown for hundreds of DC-area children and spouses of service members.

Michelle Obama wearing a blue checked Thom Browne coat and dress with shoes & studded belt (added to the coat later) by J Crew. The Obama daughters also with an interest in the fashion stakes. Sasha, wearing a periwinkle Kate Spade coat, statement necklace (seems to be her signature style) adding coloured tights and flats to complete the outfit. While, Malia her older sister opted for a cerise pink J Crew coat paired also with statement tights and flats.

According to the New York Times’ Eric Wilson, “Thom Browne’s coat and dress for Michelle Obama are both made of silk Jacquard based on a necktie fabric, custom-made for the First Lady.”

It’s not the first time that Michelle Obama has worn Thom Browne but ………. Who is Thom Browne?

A US fashion designer, founder and head of design at Thom Browne a New York City menswear and womenswear brand. Renowned initially for his quirky menswear style, notably trousers with exposed ankles and short length jackets the sleeves of which appear too short ending well before the wrist.

Cool, eclectic, beautifully tailored, dressing gown style coat, cropped cardigan/jackets, tiers, layers, subtle patterns teamed with bold bright prints, fresh yet feminine and totally unique.

How do you view wearing monochromatic black and white?

For me there is something so demur and chique about a black and white outfit. This was clearly reflected in 2013 pre-fall collections.

Is the ‘mule’ sandal making a come back too?

The peplum remains strong, this time with a gathered skirt effect, slightly longer in length, reminiscent of the dirndle skirt. Softly contrast with a subtle white pencil skirt. Note the metallic toe pumps.

Ruffles, gently flowing Georgette around the neck line. A feminine feel with a forties vibe, elegant and figure flattering.

Mix sheers and abstract patterns, a stylish work of art. Perfectly teamed with black platform wedges complete with ballet style ankle straps. This whole ensemble has to be on my wish list.

So dreamy.

Ok I know this isn’t completely to theme but you have to admit this outfit is ultra stunning, palazzo pants have to be my favourite trouser style, they scream ‘Vintage Hollywood’, smart, sassy they exude elegance and refinement. Perfectly paired with an almost sheer – but just covering up enough, black floaty blouse. The eye is immediately directed to the décolletage. The retro style belt adds the finishing touch. Something else for my wish list I am thinking.

Kentucky Derby – Get Ahead With A Hat

After another busy house renovation day, hubby and I settled on the sofa with a glass of wine in hand to watch a little TV. The Kentucky Derby!

The US National Anthem was sung by Mary J Blige – who happened to be dressed head to toe in Red.

I used to love dressing up and going to the races in the UK. But always a little worried about the dress code. What I have learned is that it depends on the type of race meeting. If it is a local meeting then dress casual, but if you are heading to something like Ascot or the Kentucky Derby then go for it! Go wild and Get Ahead with a hat!

Where do you start? Hat or dress first? It’s really is a matter of choice. If you choose a flamboyant hat then go for a more demur dress.

Oh and the winner of the Kentucky Derby was……..No. 19 I’ll have another. Hubby picked it out at the last-minute, to late to have a bet. So he had another – guiness that is!
