Stella McCartney, Adidas and the GB Olympic Team
When it was announced that Stella McCartney was appointed as Team GB’s Creative Director for the 2012 Olympics by Adidas, there were a few eyebrows raised, especially when the designs were unveiled earlier this year, having been 3 years in the making.
McCartney has been collaborating with Adidas for several years with sports clothing, so this was nothing new to her but, obviously a huge challenge designing over 500 individual articles of kit for the Olympic team. Multi shades of blue and white were the main colour components of the ‘Olympic Uniform,’ the colour red that represents the St Georges Flag (England) and the cross of St Patrick (Ireland) used as trim and footwear.
Stella’s stated that her inspiration came originally from the Union Jack flag, her ultimate goal was to unify the team.
She wanted to create sportswear that had more of a contemporary and modern feel.
McCartney said “Instead of simply using the flag in its traditional form she broke it up and used various elements in an original way.”
Her ultimate goal was to make functional, practical, and fashionable uniforms. She sought out the opinions of the athletes themselves for ideas about the practicalities of what makes a uniform fit the purpose, whilst also looking stylish.
